Malians mobilise to protect dwindling elephant population

Ali Ag Rhissa, a young Touareg nomad, sits in his tent, his gun ready, on the frontline of one of Mali's battles - protecting its majestic but dwindling herds of desert elephants. Faced with the dual threat of drought and poachers, the elephant population has almost halved in recent decades. Australia to send toxic waste to Denmark for treatment

Denmark will allow Australia to ship thousands of tonnes of toxic waste here to be disposed of since it does not have the technology to carry out the work, officials said Tuesday. NASA demos tsunami prediction system

A NASA-led research team says it has successfully demonstrated for the first time elements of a prototype tsunami prediction system. Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the system, say it can quickly and accurately assesses large earthquakes and estimate the size of a resulting tsunami.
