Two Egypt soldiers, 6 jihadists killed in 'foiled' attack
Cairo (AFP) Sept 13, 2017 - Egypt's military said two soldiers and six jihadists were killed in a "foiled" suicide bombing in Sinai on Wednesday, days after the Islamic State group staged a large scale attack in the peninsula.

The bomber had taken advantage of a fog to creep up on an army "installation" when troops spotted and killed him, the military said in a statement.

The Islamic State group also claimed Wednesday's attack in a statement on its propaganda agency Amaq.

The military said five other jihadists were killed in ensuing clashes, which followed a police convoy bombing in Sinai on Monday claimed by IS that killed 18 people.

Monday's attack was one of the deadliest in a jihadist insurgency in the peninsula that has killed hundreds of troops and policemen.

While based in North Sinai, the IS affiliate in Egypt has carried out attacks elsewhere including in Cairo, and it has claimed attacks that have killed more than 100 Coptic Christians since December.

US forces in Somalia conducted three air strikes on Islamist Shabaab targets Wednesday, killing six fighters with the Al-Qaeda linked group, the US military said.

The pre-dawn operation occurred in southern Somalia about 160 miles (260 kilometers) south of Mogadishu.

The strikes were conducted under powers President Donald Trump gave the Pentagon in March that lets the military take counter-terrorism actions -- whether airstrikes or ground raids -- when it deems them necessary to support the Somali government.

"In coordination with the federal government of Somalia, US forces conducted three precision air strikes in Somalia against al-Shabaab ... killing six terrorists," the US military's Africa Command said in a statement.

Before Trump broadened the Pentagon's authorities, US military actions in the eastern African country each required high-level review by different agencies.

US special forces have been deployed in Somalia for years. There are currently about 50 US troops there.

Shabaab has been fighting since 2007 to overthrow the internationally backed government in Somalia.

Kremlin says 'contradictory' reports on Baghdadi death
Moscow (AFP) July 17, 2017
Moscow on Monday said it was struggling to confirm if the leader of the Islamic State group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead or alive, a month after reporting his possible demise. The Russian army said in June that it was trying to verify information that its jets killed Baghdadi during a bombing raid near the IS stronghold of Raqa in Syria. But over a month after the announcement Kremlin s ... read more
