Three dead, 18 missing in China tunnel collapse: media

Three people have been confirmed dead in China after a partially built subway tunnel collapsed and the survival chances for 18 others still missing is slim, state media said on Sunday.

The accident happened Saturday in the east Chinese city of Hangzhou, trapping construction workers underground while the tunnel was swiftly flooded with water from a nearby river, the Xinhua news agency reported.

"There is (only) a slim chance of the survival of the trapped workers because of heavy flooding in the crater," Wang Guangrong, a spokesman for the local government, told Xinhua.

Altogether 75 metres (250 feet) of the tunnel collapsed, creating a huge crater that trapped 11 vehicles, including at least one bus.

As of Sunday, rescue workers had pulled out all the vehicles and brought the drivers and passengers to safety, according to Xinhua.

It said that 19 people had been taken to local hospitals.

Hangzhou started construction of a major subway network in March last year.

Five dead, 14 missing in Indonesia landslide: official

Five people have been killed and 14 are feared dead after a landslide triggered by heavy rain crushed scores of houses in Indonesia, an official said Friday.
