Three NATO soldiers killed in Afghanistan
Kabul (AFP) Oct 14, 2008 Three soldiers with NATO's International Security Assistance Force were killed in Afghanistan Tuesday when their vehicle struck a bomb, ISAF said. The 40-nation force, in Afghanistan to help the government fight a growing Taliban-led insurgency, did not give the nationalities of its latest casualties, leaving this to their home countries. "Three ISAF soldiers were killed in eastern Afghanistan October 14 when their vehicle struck an IED (improvised explosive device)," it said in a statement. Most of the international soldiers in eastern Afghanistan are from the United States, which is the main supplier of foreign troops to efforts to defeat an insurgency launched after the Taliban regime was ousted in 2001. About 227 international soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan this year, more than the whole of last year. Afghan Defence Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak acknowledged Tuesday that 2008 was the worst for insurgent violence, saying this was partly because more "terrorists" had arrived from Iraq.
