Third hurricane of eastern Pacific season forms
by Staff Writers
Miami (AFP) July 8, 2011

Calvin became the third hurricane of the eastern Pacific season Friday, US forecasters said, though it did not immediately threaten land.

The storm was a Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of about 75 miles (120 kilometers) per hour and was moving to the west at 13 miles (20 kilometers) per hour, the Miami-based US National Hurricane Center said. It was located about 340 miles (545 kilometers) south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico.

"Some fluctuations in intensity are likely today, but the general trend is for Calvin to weaken," the NHC said in its 2100 GMT bulletin.

The season's first named storm, Arlene, left at least 16 people dead in Mexico after it drenched much of the country with heavy rains and left hundreds of thousands homeless.

Mexico was struck last year by what the government described as the wettest rainy season on record.

Tropical storms and hurricanes caused flooding and mudslides that killed 125 people, left hundreds of thousands homeless, and caused damages of more than $4 billion.
