The Climate Group Addresses UN During Pivotal Week On Climate Change
New York NY (SPX) Sep 25, 2007 Dr. Steve Howard, CEO of The Climate Group today addressed the largest ever meeting of world leaders on climate change at the United Nations' headquarters in New York. The UN event "The Future in our Hands: Addressing the Leadership Challenge of Climate Change" seeks to secure political commitment on climate change from Heads of State and top officials from more than 150 countries and build momentum for the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali where post-Kyoto negotiations are scheduled to take place December 3-14. Speaking on a Plenary entitled "Financing the response to climate change - - investing in tomorrow," Dr. Howard highlighted the urgency of the global challenge and research showing that the cost of inaction greatly exceeds the cost of action. Citing work and research conducted by The Climate Group, Howard reported that public private momentum is already growing towards a low-carbon economy. Renewable energy is projected to supply 20 per cent of global power by 2020 -- up from 4 per cent today -- and investment in clean energy is predicted to grow from $71 billion in 2006 to $100 billion in 2009 (In The Black, 2007). "Over the course of the next few days," said Dr. Howard, "world leaders have a unique opportunity to make decisions and secure commitments that will help put the world on track towards a low-carbon economy. Financing this transition is a major opportunity to re-structure our economies and drive business growth." Calling for a rapid scaling of investment in the growing low-carbon economy, Howard also urged both industrialized and developing nations to step up to the plate and accelerate consensus on limiting future emissions. The Climate Group is calling for a global and comprehensive post-2012 agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which would build upon and broaden the Kyoto Protocol architecture to provide a fair and flexible framework for the widest possible contributions. Howard stressed that global agreement on a post-Kyoto framework is required by 2010. Three of The Climate Group's leadership partners also took part in four Plenary sessions alongside UN Heads of State -- California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger; Jim Rogers, CEO of Duke Energy; and Jacques Aigrain, CEO, Swiss Re. The UN's "The Future in our Hands: Addressing the Leadership Challenge of Climate Change" is the first of three key climate change summits taking place in the United States this week. The other two events are the Clinton Global Initiative -- also in New York City -- and President Bush's Climate Dialogue in Washington DC.
