Telephonics to support electronic countermeasures for US Marines

Sierra Nevada Corporation has given Telephonics a contract to support their production of MODI II electronic countermeasure systems for the U.S. Marine Corps.

Under the contract, valued at $18 million, Telephonics will help Sierra Nevada produce 580 Modi II units. Telephonics currently has the man-pack jamming device in full-rate production, and expects production to be complete by the end of summer 2016.

"Telephonics is extremely proud to partner with SNC on the Modi II team, helping provide life-saving technologies to our Service Members," Telephonics corporate vice president Hector F. Colon said in a statement. "Modi II affirms our continued commitment to support these critical programs for our Armed Forces."

The U.S. Marine Corps gave Sierra Nevada Corporation a $73.2 million contract to provide the devices in October 2015. Modi II is designed to be used both offensively and defensively, and is able to disrupt enemy communications during combat. It can also be used to protect users from radio-controlled improvised explosive devices.

The Modi II system is a follow up the current Sierra Nevada-made electronic warfare systems and range instrument devices currently in use by the Marines, which includes the Thor II AN/PLQ-5 and Thor III AN/PLQ-9.
