Taiwan assesses damage after China spy ring revealed in US
Taipei (AFP) Feb 12, 2008 Taiwan's defence ministry said Tuesday it had set up a task force to assess security leaks after four people were charged in the United States with spying for China involving US military sales to Taipei. "The defence ministry considers the espionage case recently cracked in the United States of great importance," the ministry said in a statement. "The defence ministry has organised a contingency group to assess, and control damages, if any, that may arise from the case," it said, without elaborating. A Pentagon official and three others were charged Monday with espionage activities involving sensitive military and aerospace secrets. The US official, Gregg William Bergersen, is a weapons systems policy analyst at the Pentagon's Defence Security Cooperation Agency, which implements the US Defence Department's foreign military sales programme. One of the other men charged is Taiwan-born US citizen Tai Shen Kuo, who stands accused of having worked under the direction of an unnamed Chinese official to obtain classified information from Bergersen. The Taipei-based United Evening News reported that Taiwan's defence ministry was especially alarmed as Bergersen had access to information about a US arms deal known as the "Po Sheng Project". Taiwan hopes the project, due to be completed in 2011 at a total cost of 53 billion Taiwan dollars (1.65 billion US), will help boost the command and communications capabilities of its troops, the paper said. Taiwan and China split in 1949 at the end of a civil war. Beijing considers the island to be part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary.
