Cleburne TX (SPX) Mar 10, 2008
Cleburne ISD has been selected to be the first participant in the TXU Energy Solar Academy education program. This educational initiative provides selected school districts across Texas with the latest solar technology and energy lessons for the classroom.

TXU Energy is sponsoring the TXU Energy Solar Academy program through a partnership with the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project's nationally recognized solar energy education program. Cleburne ISD is the first of approximately 40 school districts to receive the program, which includes teacher training, an onsite solar array, and classroom educational materials.

"This program will help our students be environmentally responsible, motivated, and technology-adept lifelong learners," Cleburne ISD Superintendent Robert Damron said. "TXU Energy's gift will give our students the opportunity to use emerging solar technology and learn about energy innovations through hands-on experience."

More than 36,000 students across Texas will be taught about renewable energy through science, geography and math. Participating school districts will receive a free 1-kW solar array that is Web-based to show real-time data on how much electricity is being generated.

They will also receive project materials and energy-based lesson plans. Approximately 400 teachers throughout Texas will participate in a NEED workshop where they will receive interactive teaching tools and grade-specific lessons from kindergarten to high school.

The solar arrays have a 20-year life and will be accessible through the TXU Energy Web site. The Web site will enable students, teachers and parents to view real-time data on how much power is being generated and the resulting environmental benefit.

"We have a strong commitment to helping consumers of all ages understand the energy choices that are available to them," Jim Burke, CEO of TXU Energy said. "This unique program is all a part of our mission to serve our customers and the local community."
