Armed Yemeni men loyal to the Shiite Huthi movement attend a tribal gathering against al-Qaeda militants in the Bani al-Harith area, north of Sanaa, on August 17, 2014. Yemen faces multiple domestic problems, including ongoing insecurity and insurgencies posed by Shiite Houthi fighters, southern separatists and the al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Morocco says it has arrested two IS jihadists
Rabat (AFP) Aug 22, 2014 - Morocco said on Friday it had arrested two Islamic State jihadists who had been planning to leave for IS training camps in Syria and Iraq to prepare attacks at home.

The two, whose identities were not disclosed, "planned to receive military training" before taking action in Morocco, "under the Islamic State's plans to expand its field of operations," an interior ministry statement said.

It did not say when or where police made the arrests, but added the detentions had led to the arrest of four more people in a crime network in the central city of Fez.

Morocco has announced the dismantling of around 20 "terrorist cells" in recent years, the most recent in mid-August, in cooperation with Spain.

The kingdom has expressed deep concern about the number of Moroccan jihadists currently fighting or in Syria and Iraq or who have fought there.

Last month, the authorities announced that security had been boosted in the face of what they called a "serious threat".

Local media published photographs of heavy weaponry deployed in strategic locations across the country.

Nigeria military rejects Boko Haram 'caliphate' claim
Abuja (AFP) Aug 24, 2014 - Nigeria's military on Sunday rejected a claim by Boko Haram's leader that a northeast town seized by the insurgents earlier this month has been placed under an Islamic caliphate.

"That claim is empty," defence spokesman Chris Olukolade said in reference to Abubakar Shekau's boastings about the town of Gwoza in Borno state.

"The sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nigerian state is still intact," and operations "to secure that area from the activities of the bandits is still ongoing," he added.

Separate bomb attacks by Al-Qaeda suspects on Saturday killed a senior army officer and three soldiers across Yemen's restive south and southeast, military officials said.

"A bomb planted by Al-Qaeda on a road linking the towns of Seiyun and Shibam (in the southeastern province of Hadramawt) exploded when an army vehicle passed, killing three soldiers and wounding six others," a military official told AFP.

The official added that two suspected Al-Qaeda members were arrested at a checkpoint at the entrance to Seiyun just hours before the attack.

Hadramawt has been the scene of frequent attacks on the army.

On August 17, six Al-Qaeda suspects and three soldiers were killed in clashes in the restive province where the army has boosted its deployment.

In the main southern city of Aden, meanwhile, a senior Yemeni army officer was killed on Saturday when a bomb planted in his vehicle exploded, another military official said, also blaming Al-Qaeda.

"A bomb exploded in the car of General Ahmed Mohammed Saleh al-Omari, logistics and supplies officer of the third military region... wounding him and his son" in Aden's Al-Mansura district, the source said.

Both were hospitalised but Omari later died of his wounds, the official and a medical source said.

Yemeni authorities blame Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which has been branded by Washington as the extremist network's deadliest franchise, for most attacks on members of the security forces.

In late April, the army launched a ground offensive against AQAP in Shabwa and nearby Abyan provinces, both in the south.

The group is active across several parts of Yemen, having exploited the collapse of central authority during a 2011 uprising that ousted veteran president Ali Abdullah Saleh.
