Northrop Grumman, Terma Group to collaborate in naval markets
London (UPI) Sep 21, 2015 - Global security and technology companies Northrop Grumman Corporation and Terma Group have signed a collaboration agreement with one another to pursue new naval market interests.

The agreement establishes a partnership between Terma and Northrop Grumman's Sperry Marine division, which specializes in smart navigation and ship control systems. The first order of business for the collaboration will be the integration of Sperry Marine's VisionMaster FT radar with Terma's SCANTER 6002 surveillance radar.

Jan Hansen, director of global business development for Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine, greeted the partnership with enthusiasm.

"The partnership will bring significant value to the customer, specifically by incorporating near, low level air and surface surveillance capability to our navigation suite," Hansen said, "we expect our collaborative working relationship with Terma, with its 60 years of experience in the radar business, to bring mutually beneficial opportunities to both of our companies as well as exciting new capabilities to the end user."

Terma's Surface Search and Short Range Air Surveillance Radar (SCANTER) systems are designed for small target detection to assist authorities with monitoring illegal activities. The system has been used to track drug trafficking, illegal immigration, piracy, and terrorism. Terma says their system sets itself apart from commercial radars by its capacity for noise and interference rejection, signal processing, electronic interfacing, signal distribution, and environmental toughness.

SCANTER is used on board naval vessels to assist with backing up primary surveillance systems, assisting in tactical task functions, helicopter landing control, and a variety of other functions.

Northrop Grumman's Sperry Marine is teaming with Terma of Denmark for naval business, Northrop Grumman announced.

Their initial focus will be the new surveillance mode for Sperry Marine's VisionMaster FT radar family, which can interface with Terma's SCANTER 6002 surveillance radar.

"The partnership between Terma and Sperry Marine has developed positively over the past years and Terma sees a strategic advantage in taking the partnership further," said Lars Weiss Laursen, director, radar sales, Terma. "The SCANTER 6002 is an affordable and easily integrable system that can detect small targets in low visibility, harsh weather conditions."

Added Jan Hansen, director of global business development, Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine: "This agreement will bring significant value to the customer, specifically by incorporating near, low level air and surface surveillance capability to our navigation suite, in addition to out-of-the-box compliance with International Maritime Organization requirements.

"We expect our collaborative working relationship with Terma, with its 60 years of experience in the radar business, to bring mutually beneficial opportunities to both of our companies as well as exciting new capabilities to the end user."

Sperry Marine, headquartered in Britain, was this week awarded a contract through Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering to provide a fully integrated bridge system for a future frigate of the Royal Thai Navy.

The bridge system will feature its VisionMaster FT family of products and navigation systems, such as NAVIGAT X MK1 gyrocompass, NAVIKNOT speed log, a Warship Automatic Identification System, and a Voyage Data Recorder.

Sperry Marine said the contract from Daewoo features an option for the provision of two additional bridge systems.
