Space Quarters Secures $5 Million to Pioneer Robotic Space Construction

Space Quarters Inc., a deep-tech startup spun out from Tohoku University, has raised $5.0 million in seed funding to accelerate the development of robotic and electron beam welding systems for constructing large-scale infrastructure in orbit and on the Moon. The funding round was led by Frontier Innovations Inc., with additional investment from Keio Innovation Initiative, Global Brain's Tokyu Construction - GB Innovation Fund, XTech Ventures, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital, and SMBC Venture Capital.

The company aims to enable autonomous assembly of large structures beyond Earth through its proprietary robotic welding platform. By manufacturing and joining modular materials in orbit, Space Quarters' technology eliminates the constraints of launching preassembled structures from Earth, reducing cost and risk while allowing for much larger and more durable designs.

Established in 2022 under the mission to "Expand the Potential of Humanity," Space Quarters has developed next-generation systems that support sustainable human presence in space through automated fabrication and assembly processes. The company's approach represents a paradigm shift in how orbital and lunar infrastructure can be built.

Space Quarters has collaborated with leading organizations including Sky Perfect JSAT, JAXA, Obayashi Corporation, and IHI Aerospace. Together, they have advanced ground-based proof-of-concept demonstrations for autonomous welding and structural assembly.

The newly secured funding will be used to expand its engineering team, enhance testing facilities, and prepare for in-space and lunar demonstration missions scheduled for 2027 - 2028. With system-level development now underway, Space Quarters is targeting its first commercial deployment within the decade.

Lunar mega basin signals radioactive ejecta and reshapes Moon origin story
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Oct 09, 2025
New analyses of the South Pole-Aitken basin recast the formation of the Moon's largest impact crater and what it reveals about lunar origins. Led by University of Arizona planetary scientist Jeffrey Andrews-Hanna, the study in Nature outlines how the basin's geometry and chemistry point to a northward-moving impactor and a radioactive-rich ejecta deposit. Spanning more than 1,200 miles north to south and 1,000 miles east to west, the oblong basin formed from a glancing blow rather than a head-on s ... read more
