Private space company Space Exploration Technologies Corp. may add a small Texas town on the Gulf of Mexico to its list of rocket launch sites, documents show.

The company, better known as SpaceX, has filed documents with the Federal Aviation Administration saying it was investigating establishing a launch pad in Cameron County, Texas, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Hawthorne, Calif.-based company already has a launch location in Cape Canaveral, Fla., and is building another at at Hindenburg Air Force Base in California.

SpaceX is considering a number of potential locations across the country for a new commercial launch pad, a spokeswoman said, including the area near Brownsville, Texas, but planning is in the early stages.

"There is a long way to go before this could happen," spokeswoman Kirstin Brost Grantham said.

The document filed with the FAA said SpaceX was preparing an environmental report for a possible launch pad.

"SpaceX proposes to construct a vertical launch area and a control center area to support up to 12 commercial launches per year," the document said.
