Design guru Starck reveals 'revolutionary' Apple project
Paris (AFP) April 13, 2012 - Design guru Philippe Starck is working on a "revolutionary" project with US computer giant Apple that will come out in time for Christmas, the French designer revealed on Friday.

"Indeed, we have a big project together that will be out in eight months," Starck told France Info radio, declining to comment further because of what he called California-based Apple's "secrecy cult".

The 63-year-old designer did however say that the project was "fairly, if not very, revolutionary".

Starck, who has previously designed everything from night clubs to bus passes, also told how for years he regularly visited legendary Apple boss Steve Jobs, who died in October, at his Palo Alto, California, home.

"For seven years I went to see him once a month in Palo Alto and I'm going there on Monday because even if he's dead, now I go to see his wife. We used to love talking about interesting things," he said.

Smartphones are bridging a US digital divide as minorities tap into the Internet using mobile devices, according to a Pew study released on Friday.

"Groups that have traditionally been on the other side of the digital divide in basic Internet access are using wireless connections to go online," the study concluded.

"African American and English-speaking Latinos are as likely as whites to own any sort of mobile phone, and are more likely to use their phones for a wider range of activities."

While race and gender were fading as obstacles to Internet access, matters changed when it came to age, education, and income, according to the study.

"Ultimately, neither race nor gender are themselves part of the story of digital differences in its current form," the study said.

"Instead, age (being 65 or older), a lack of a high school education, and having a low household income (less than $20,000 per year) are the strongest negative predictors for Internet use."

The findings, based on a survey conducted in the middle of last year, also found notably less Internet use by those who opted to respond in Spanish instead of English.

"Yet even groups that have persistently had the lowest access rates have still seen significant increases over the past decade," Pew researchers said.

One in five US adults do not use the Internet, with the most common reason being that they simply weren't interested, according to the study.

German court rules in Motorola's favour in Apple patent row
Frankfurt (AFP) April 13, 2012 - Motorola scored a victory in a patent war with rival Apple Friday when a German court upheld a decision banning it from offering services for syncrhonising e-mails on its devices in Germany.

The Mannheim regional court found that Apple's iCloud and MobileMe services breached the patents on the technology held by Motorola Mobility and it ordered Apple to pay damages to Motorola, but did not specify the amount.

The ruling marks a victory in a series of bitter patent war between various technology giants.

Earlier this month, European regulators opened two antitrust investigations against Motorola Mobility, bought by US Internet giant Google.

The European Commission said it would check whether Motorola had abused a dominant market position on patents by seeking injunctions to stop Apple and Microsoft from selling their iPhone, iPad, Xbox and Windows products.

Microsoft and Apple accuse Motorola Mobility of unfairly using its extensive patent portfolio to try to block competing products through court orders across the EU and by charging excessive licensing prices for essential patents.

Apple denies e-book pricing scheme
San Francisco (AFP) April 12, 2012
Apple on Thursday denied a charge that it schemed with publishers to hike prices for e-books, portraying itself as a hero for prying Amazon's "monopolistic grip" from the market. "The DOJ's accusation of collusion against Apple is simple not true," Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr said in an emailed statement a day after a Department of Justice antitrust suit was filed. "The launch of the iBo ... read more
