Saudi-led air strikes kill 28 in Yemen: residents
Sanaa (AFP) Sept 27, 2015 - Air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition killed 23 Huthi rebels and five civilians at a village in northwestern Yemen on Sunday, residents said.

Coalition helicopters and planes targeted a building used by the rebels at the village of Zaylaa, in Hajja province which borders Saudi Arabia, they said.

"Houses nearby were hit and five civilians were killed as well as 23 Huthis," a resident told AFP on condition of anonymity.

He added that 17 people were wounded, but did not say whether they were civilians or Huthi fighters.

The air strikes came as the Saudi army announced Sunday that one of its generals was killed while on duty in the kingdom's Jazan province near the border with Yemen.

He is the second high-ranking Saudi military official to have been killed on the border this weekend.

A colonel and another border guard died late Friday in a gun battle after a landmine blast along the frontier with Yemen, according to the Saudi interior ministry.

In late March, a Saudi-led coalition launched a military campaign against the Huthi insurgents to stop them from taking control of the whole country.

Around 70 people, mostly soldiers, have been killed in Saudi Arabia from border shelling and skirmishes since the coalition campaign began.

A Saudi general has been killed in the south of the country near the border with Yemen, where he had been "defending the country", the army announced Sunday.

Brigadier General Ibrahim Hamzi, deputy commander of the 8th brigade in Jazan, died from his injuries after being taken to hospital, Saudi Arabia's official news agency said, without giving the date or exact circumstances of the incident.

He is the second high-ranking Saudi military official to have been announced killed on the Yemen border this weekend.

A colonel and another border guard were killed late Friday in a gun battle after a landmine blast along the frontier with Yemen, according to the interior ministry.

Several other Saudi soldiers have also been killed since March when the kingdom formed an Arab coalition to fight Shiite Huthi rebels in Yemen.

In June, a Saudi lieutenant colonel died in a landmine blast in Jazan, while another general was killed in cross-border fire in August.

Riyadh launched air strikes against the Huthis to support the internationally-backed government of Yemeni President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, which was losing ground.

Saudi Arabia feared the Huthis would take over all of Yemen and move its neighbour into the orbit of the Sunni kingdom's Shiite regional rival Iran.

But the rebels have lost territory since late July when the coalition began deploying ground troops in support of local forces.

Around 70 people have been killed in Saudi Arabia from border shelling and skirmishes since the coalition campaign began. Soldiers have accounted for most of the border casualties.

The United Nations says nearly 4,900 people, including a vast number of civilians, have been killed in Yemen since late March.

London (AFP) Sept 24, 2015
Britain's government is facing a legal challenge Thursday over its use of a drone to kill two British Islamic State (IS) group jihadists in Syria, even though it is not part of military action there. Prime Minister David Cameron announced this month that a British drone had killed two British jihadists and another unidentified militant in the group's stronghold of Raqqa in August.
