Safran selling Morpho Detection to the Smith Group

Engility wins new award for continued support of defense agency
Chantilly, Va. (UPI) Apr 21, 2016 - The U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency's Research and Development Directorate is to receive engineering and technical assistance from Engility Holdings Inc.

Under the $248 million award, Engility will work with the DTRA directorate in the Department of Defense's Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Combat Support Agency.

Additional details about the work were not disclosed.

"This award continues a nearly 50-year partnership between Engility and DTRA to provide high-end Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive technical and acquisition program support," said Engility CEO Lynn Dugle. "DTRA performs indispensable work that safeguards the American people and we are proud to partner with them on this critical mission."

The re-compete contract is a cost-plus-fixed-fee award for one base year and four additional one-year options.

Morpho Detection LLC, a U.S. subsidiary of France's Safran, is to be sold to Smiths Group Plc.

The selling price for Morpho is an enterprise value of $710 million, Safran said, and the sale is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

The sale is expected to close early in 2017.

Philippe Petitcolin, chief executive officer of Safran, said the sale "... is in line with our announced strategy to focus our development on the aerospace and defense markets.''

Morpho Detection is headquartered in Newark, Calif. It provides solutions at airports for detecting and identifying chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive threats, as well as other illicit items.

Morpho Detection after the sale will become part of Smiths Group's Detection business segment, which designs and manufactures sensors for the detection and identification of explosives, weapons, chemical agents and other contraband.
