The Shiveluch volcano, Russia's northernmost active volcano, is spewing ashes up to 29,500 feet in the air, scientists said Monday.

A local department of the geophysical service with the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement video monitoring of the volcano was being hindered by poor weather conditions, but monitors registered nearly 150 seismic disturbances in the previous 24 hours.

RIA Novosti reported the latest eruption of the 10,771-foot volcano, which has emitted ash periodically since May 2009, posed no immediate threat to nearby communities, but the ash fallout could pose health and environmental concerns as well as a threat to air traffic.

The Russian news agency said up to 30 of the more than 150 volcanoes in Kamchatka are active.
