Russia will work with NATO on missile defence: Medvedev

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev confirmed Saturday that he had agreed to work with Moscow's former Western foe NATO to plan a European missile defence shield.

"We have ambitious plans, we will work across all directions including European missile defense, and the Russia-NATO council has demonstrated that," Medvedev said after a summit with NATO leaders in Lisbon.

NATO agrees on Europe-wide missile defence system

US President Barack Obama and his NATO allies agreed on Friday to shield Europe's peoples from rogue rocket attacks with a screen of interceptor missiles, and to invite Russia to take part. The deal commits NATO members to deploy a phalanx of anti-missile batteries to shoot down incoming missiles from any future enemy and urges Moscow to link its own defensive systems to the grid.
