Russia test fires missile interceptors

Russia's military said Tuesday it had successfully test fired a number of missile interceptors from a site in Kazakhstan.

Short-range interceptors were fired at mock targets to "confirm their tactical and technical characteristics and extend the period of use of this type of interceptor," said a spokesman for the military's strategic missile forces, Colonel Alexander Vovk, quoted by Interfax news agency.

The type of interceptor was not specified in the initial report.

The test comes amid tensions with the United States over Washington's plans to set up missile defence facilities in the Czech Republic and Poland.

On Monday Russia test fired an inter-continental ballistic missile, which was launched from Kazakhstan and landed on the Kamchatka peninsula.

Tuesday's interceptor test was carried out from the Sary-Shagan test ground in ex-Soviet Kazakhstan, where Russia maintains several military sites.

Lockheed Martin's THAAD Weapon System Conducts Exo-Atmospheric Interceptor Test

Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) conducted a successful exo-atmospheric test of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Weapon System at the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) on Kauai, HI. The flight test demonstrated the system's ability to detect, track and intercept an incoming unitary target above the Earth's atmosphere.
