Rio Tinto to explore for uranium in Jordan
Amman (AFP) Feb 23, 2009 Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto signed a deal on Monday with energy-parched Jordan to explore for uranium as part of the kingdom's efforts to pave the way for producing nuclear energy. "Under the 18-month agreement, the firm will fund the exploration of different areas of Jordan for uranium, thorium and zirconium," Khaled Tukan, head of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, told the state-run Petra news agency. "A consortium between the two sides will be established at a later stage, boosting prospects of further cooperation in the future." Jordan, which imports around 95 percent of its energy needs, has signed nuclear cooperation agreements with several countries in a bid to produce atomic energy for power generation and water desalination. The country's 1.2 billion tonnes of phosphate reserves are estimated to contain 130,000 tonnes of uranium and the government wants the first nuclear plant to be ready by 2015. The kingdom is the latest Sunni Arab country, including Egypt and pro-Western Gulf states, to announce plans for nuclear power programmes in the face of Shiite Iran's controversial atomic drive.
