Rhino poaching arrests up in South Africa

South Africa says it has arrested 89 suspected rhino poachers this year as part of an efforts to beef up its campaign to curb poaching.

There were 165 arrests in 2010 and 232 suspected poachers were arrested last year, including 26 who died in clashes with enforcement authorities, officials said.

Even with the stepped-up campaign there has been a surge in rhino poaching.

A total of 135 endangered rhino have been killed by poachers this year, the country's environment department said, about a third of the number killed in 2011.

The World Wide Fund for Nature has linked the recent upsurge in rhino poaching to increased demand for rhino horn.

The demand is mostly from Asia, particularly Vietnam, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.

"Rhino horn has gained popularity among wealthy Vietnamese elites and business people to give as a gift, when currying political favor, or taking as an antidote to overindulgence," said Tom Milliken of wildlife trade monitoring group TRAFFIC. "But killing endangered rhinos to mitigate a hangover is a criminal way to see in the New Year."

Vietnam police seize frozen pangolins, iguanas
Hanoi (AFP) March 23, 2012 - Vietnamese police have seized five tonnes of frozen pangolins and iguanas that were destined for the cooking pot in China, an official said Friday.

"We found the animals after a random check on Wednesday. They were supposed to be sent for consumption in China," a provincial anti-smuggling policeman told AFP.

The 29-year-old owner of the animals has not been arrested but "an investigation is ongoing and the case will be sent to prosecutors soon for a decision", added the policeman, who did not wish to be named.

Pangolins, also known as scaly anteaters, are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, and trading of the animal and its products is illegal.

Demand for pangolin and iguana meat, which supposedly have medicinal and aphrodisiac qualities, is widespread in China and in Vietnam, which has a poor conservation record.

Diet may be affecting rhino reproduction
San Diego CA (SPX) Mar 23, 2012
Southern white rhinoceros populations, once thriving in zoos, have been showing severely reduced reproductivity among the captive-born population. San Diego Zoo Global researchers have a possible lead into why the southern white rhinoceros population in managed-care facilities is declining: phytoestrogens in their diet might be contributing to reproductive failure in the females.
