Possible Australian missile buy gets State Dept. approval

An Australian request to procure AIM-120D Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles from the United States has gained State Department approval.

The possible deal through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program has an estimated value of $122 billion.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which oversees the FMS program, said in its notification to Congress the package would include as many as 450 missiles, as many as 34 AIM-120D Air Vehicles Instrumented, up to six Instrumented Test Vehicles, and as many as 10 spare AIM-120 Guidance Sections.

Containers, weapon system support equipment, support and test equipment, site survey, transportation, repair and return warranties, spare and repair parts, and logistics would be included.

"This proposed sale is in support of the Royal Australian Air Force's F/A-18, E/A-18G, and F-35 aircraft," DSCA said. "This proposed sale will provide the RAAF additional air-to-air intercept capability and increase interoperability with the U.S. Air Force."
