China's Zijin faces gold production limit after toxic spill
China's Zijin Mining Group said Wednesday it had been ordered to limit production at a gold mine located near a separate copper mine that was the source of a toxic spill. Poisonous waste water from the copper mine in Fujian province operated by Zijin -- China's top gold producer -- contaminated a major river earlier this month, killing off nearly 2,000 tonnes of fish. The output limits imposed by local authorities on the nearby Zijinshan Gold Mine aimed to prevent further environmental risks, said a company statement filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Zijin, whose gold output was 75.4 tonnes in 2009, estimated production would be reduced by about one tonne this year due to the limit. Zijin said earlier that police had detained three executives over the spill and the securities regulator had launched an investigation into the company over possible violation of information disclosure rules. The leak took place on July 3 but was only disclosed by the company nine days later. Zijin had already been ordered to halt production and make modifications at the copper mine. Shanghai-listed shares of Zijin were up 3.7 percent to 5.93 yuan in early trading after initially dropping following the announcement. Trading in the shares resumed Wednesday after a two-day suspension pending the production limit announcement.

More than a thousand barrels of explosive chemicals were washed into a major waterway in northeastern China on Wednesday, state media said, in the country's latest environmental accident.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m. (0200 GMT) in Jilin province after floodwaters swept the barrels into the Songhua river, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing the local government.

The barrels were from a local factory near Jilin city and contained more than 160 tonnes of methyl chloride, a highly explosive colourless gas, the report said.

Emergency workers were trying to recover the barrels and local environmental protection authorities were monitoring the water quality of the river, it added.

Jilin is the latest province to have been hit by recent deadly floods that have killed 333 people since July 14 and left another 300 missing, according to the latest official figures.
