by James Laporta
Washington (UPI) Feb 19, 2018

Five companies have been awarded contracts for conceptual design on the Navy's next guided missile frigate, or FFG(X).

The deals, announced Friday by the Department of Defense, were awarded to General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Austal USA, Lockheed Martin, Fincantieri Marine and Huntington Ingalls.

The companies are competing for the Navy's plans to build 20 next-generation guided-missile frigates.

Each contract is valued at more than $14.9 million under the terms of a firm-fixed-price contract, with the final request for proposal due in 2019, and contracts for construction expected to be awarded in 2020.

The contracts also includes option that could potentially increase their cumulative value to around $22 million.

Work on the contract will occur several states across the United States and overseas, and is expected to be completed by June 2019.
