Nate leaves two Gulf oil workers dead, one still missing
by Staff Writers
Xalapa, Mexico (AFP) Sept 11, 2011

The Mexican navy found two corpses and seven missing oil workers from a platform in the Gulf of Mexico that was evacuated due to Tropical Storm Nate, the state oil company said Sunday.

Search efforts continued for one more missing worker, Pemex said in a statement, while the US-based National Hurricane Center downgraded Nate to a tropical depression as it moved inland over Mexico.

The seven rescued workers, who were evacuated from the Trinity II platform last Thursday, included a Bangladeshi, four Mexicans and two Americans.

The two bodies had not been identified yet, the statement said.

Pemex on Sunday evacuated another 473 workers from six platforms in the Gulf of Mexico due to bad weather.

Nate made landfall on Mexico's gulf coast as a tropical storm early Sunday, bringing torrential rain and high winds.

Authorities in the eastern state of Veracruz maintained a storm alert and warned of the threat of flooding and landslides in mountainous regions from the heavy rain.

The cyclone was expected to dissipate Monday, forecasters said.

Further to the east was fast-moving Tropical Storm Maria, which was packing winds of up to 60 miles per hour (95 kph) and was expected to pass well east of the Bahamas Monday night and Tuesday.
