Moderate earthquake strikes north of Philippines

Basco, Philippines (AFP) Jan 23, 2009
A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck north of the Philippines Friday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no reports of casualties or damage.

The shallow undersea quake struck at 8:28 pm (1228 GMT) around 108 kilometres (67 miles) northwest of Basco, the capital of the Batan Islands, which lie in the Luzon Strait between the Philippines and Taiwan, the USGS said.

The quake had a depth of 10 kilometres, it said.

The Philippines, a nation made up of more than 7,000 islands, sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
