Tactical radios for voice and high-bandwidth data communications have been ordered from Harris Corporation by an unidentified customer in the Middle East.

The contract for the company's Falcon III system -- together with accessories and spares, vehicular and base station systems, is worth $88 million.

"Harris' strong presence in the region, combined with our continued investment in a leading-edge Falcon portfolio of tactical communications products and systems, enables us to transition our customers from legacy, voice-dominated communications to modern networked wideband system solutions," said Brendan O'Connell, president, International business, Harris RF Communications.

"These advanced communications systems will support the customer's current and future operational requirements for simultaneous secure voice and high-bandwidth data across a wide range of missions."

Harris said the capability being provided is comprised of RF-7800 wideband tactical radios, such as the 7800H model for enhanced data capabilities in long-range, beyond-line-of-sight environments; the RF-7850M for wideband, mobile ad-hoc networking; and the RF-7800S, a lightweight soldier personal radio for full voice and data communications.

Details on the number of units to be provided and their deliver schedules were not disclosed.
