A meteor recently lit up the skies over Spain and Portugal, and was also captured by the Meteosat Third Generation Imager weather satellite hovering 36,000 km away in geostationary orbit.

On 18 May, the meteor burned up over Spain and Portugal. The Lightning Imager on the Meteosat Third Generation Imager satellite, also captured the meteor zooming across the skies at over 160,000 km an hour. It is the first geostationary weather satellite capable of detecting lightning across Europe, Africa, and surrounding waters. Data from the Lightning Imager will enhance weather forecasters' predictions of severe storms, especially in remote regions and on oceans where lightning detection is limited.
