Libya PM denounces NATO strikes as UN envoy visits
by Staff Writers
Tripoli (AFP) July 9, 2011

Libya's prime minister on Saturday denounced the air strikes launched on the country by the NATO-led alliance in comments to an envoy of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, state television reported.

Baghdadi al-Mahmudi denounced what he called NATO's "flagrant violations of the (UN) resolutions 1970 and 1973" and its deadly attacks on civilians and residential districts" in comments to UN envoy Abdel Ilah al-Khatib.

"These raids, which have caused human victims must be considered as crimes against humanity and an act of genocide," Mahmudi added.

The UN Security Council voted two resolutions on Libya: 1970, passed on February 26 of this year; and 1973, passed on March 17.

The first imposed strict sanctions on Moamer Kadhafi's regime including an arms embargo and called for measures to protect civilians.

The second, approved as Kadhafi's forces closed on rebel-held Benghazi, authorised the use of force against pro-Kadhafi forces, which paved the way for the current wave of NATO-coordinated air strikes.

Mahmudi and Ban agreed on the UN envoy's visit following talks Thursday, during which the UN chief called on Mahmudi to halt the fighting and work to improve humanitarian conditions.
