Iranian opposition protestors urge powers to halt talks

Geneva (AFP) Dec 6, 2010
About 100 exiled Iranian opposition members on Monday urged world powers to halt talks with Iran during a protest rally outside the United Nations in Geneva.

The rally, called by the National Council of Resistance of Iran, took place just a few hundred metres away from the location of negotiations between Iran and Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany, on Tehran's disputed nuclear prgramme

"We have to stop dialogue and put more sanctions in place," against the current regime in Tehran," one of the demonstrators, Shokohleh Magdi, said.

Waving Iranian flags and crossed out pictures of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, they braved heavy rain to call on the international community to take a harder line with the Islamic regime

"The Iranian regime is seeking to gain time to produce and atomic bomb, the Iranian nuclear programme is not a civilian project," said protestor Roland Vakil.

Tehran maintains that it is seeking nuclear energy for peaceful purposes but Western countries have accused the Islamic republic of engaging in a covert programme to build nuclear weapons.
