IAEA chief to visit uranium enriching plant in Brazil

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog IAEA Mohamed ElBaradei will arrive in Brazil Wednesday for a visit to an uranium enrichment plant due to start selling fuel in 2010.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency is to meet with Foreign Minister Celso Amorim and Science and Technnology Minister Sergio Rezende in Brasilia on Wednesday.

Then on Thursday, ElBaredei will visit a nuclear fuel plant in Resende, in Rio de Janeiro state, some 180 kilometers (110 miles) west of Rio.

Nuclear energy currently provides some 4.5 percent of the country's energy needs as most of the electricity come from hydroelectric plants. The aim is for the figure to climb to 5.7 percent in 2010.

In the city of Rio de Janeiro, ElBaradei also will visit the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials.

ElBaradei is on a tour of South America, and he has already held talks with Argentine President Nestor Kirchner.

The Canadian province of Ontario is preparing to invest tens of billions of dollars in the modernization of its nuclear industry, a project that promises a windfall for international industry leaders.
