China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) has taken a pivotal step in contributing to national space ambitions with the launch of the Hong Kong Space Robotics and Energy Center. This newly established facility is set to play a significant role in China's upcoming Chang'e-8 lunar mission.

The center, operating under the InnoHK Research Clusters and led by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), is focusing on the creation of an advanced lunar robot. This robot, part of a wider international collaboration, is being engineered to perform multiple tasks on the Moon's surface.

Yu Hongyu, director of HKUST's Space Science and Technology Institute, highlighted the robot's innovative features: "The robot is equipped with dual robotic arms and is capable of deploying and installing instruments, collecting lunar surface samples and more."

Designed with autonomy in mind, the robot will map lunar terrain and adapt its movement accordingly. Another standout feature is its function as a mobile power hub, enabling it to recharge other equipment used during lunar exploration.

"In response to the Moon's low gravity and harsh environmental conditions, we are developing a software to ensure that the robot can autonomously adapt its posture and functions based on the environmental changes," Yu added.

Emphasizing the region's research strength, Sun Dong, secretary for innovation, technology and industry of the HKSAR government, stated that Hong Kong's universities and institutions have robust capabilities to support aerospace research. He underscored the government's strong commitment to fostering technological innovation and aiding China's pursuit of global space leadership, while advancing Hong Kong as a center for international scientific and technological excellence.
