Inhabitants of a South Carolina county who were invited to trade guns for roses on Valentine's Day turned in 191 handguns and rifles, a spokesman for the county sheriff's office said Tuesday.

The sheriff's office gave out roses and a gift card for a rifle or roses and two gift cards for a handgun, he said.

"We recovered 191 weapons and issued 328, 50 dollars Best Buy gift cards," said Lieutenant Chris Cowan, a sheriff's spokesman.

"We recovered handguns, rifles and shotguns. We had a mix of people from young and old, males and females, to all races come to the event. We had people waiting in line before we even started," he said.

"We had some brand new guns and some were old, but every single one was still functional and they will all be ballistically tested by our forensic analysts," he said.

No amnesties were offered, and people turning in weapons had to give their names, he said, calling the Saturday swap a "good event" that raised awareness about gun violence.
