Guatemala quake death toll rises to 44

Guatemala City (AFP) Nov 13, 2012


Rescue workers and sniffer dogs located two more bodies in Guatemala following last week's powerful earthquake, bringing the death toll to 44, authorities said Tuesday.

Some 16,000 people were affected by the 7.4 magnitude quake off Guatemala's Pacific coast on November 7, the country's most violent seismic event since 1976 when almost 23,000 people perished in an earthquake.

The same area was hit by a 6.2-magnitude aftershock on Sunday.

A powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar at the weekend has left 38 people dead or missing, the Red Cross said Tuesday as a new tremor rattled the government's showpiece capital Naypyidaw.
