German Navy testing unmanned counter-mine vessel

The German Navy has received a multi-role unmanned surface vessel from Atlas Elektronik UK for assessment for use in anti-mine operations.

The company, a subsidiary of Germany's Atlas Elektronik GmbH, said the ARCIMS was delivered to the German Naval Technical Center at Eckernfoerde Naval Base.

The vessel, which can be remotely controlled or operated by a crew on board, is about 36 feet long, has a four-ton payload capacity and a speed of 40 knots. It also features a shock-resistant hull and low platform underwater signature.

Atlas Elektronik UK said the ARCIM was specifically designed for minesweeping and towed-sonar operations and been ordered by Britain's Royal Navy.

"The whole ATLAS Group welcomes the opportunity to support WTD71 [the Naval Technical Center] with their future developments and look forward to further collaboration within forthcoming European projects," said Mario Pohl, Atlas Elektronik GmbH's Vice President, Sales, Germany.
