General Dynamics Information and Technology is to design, build and operate a new IP-based emergency communications system for Massachusetts.

The future system NG9-1-1 system, which will comply with the National Emergency Number Association's architecture standards, will accept requests for service from existing public networks through new and emerging modes of communication and devices.

Geographical Information System data will also be integrated into the system to accurately map a caller's location and route the calls to the public safety answering points, the company said.

"Massachusetts is taking a great step forward for its citizens and emergency responders by modernizing its 9-1-1 system to accept an array of new modes of communication," said Charlie Plummer, vice president and general manager of General Dynamics Information Technology's IT Solutions sector. "Our history of building and operating critical information systems for a range of customers -- defense, federal civilian government, health, homeland security, intelligence -- gives us the experience to support state and local governments' transition to NG9-1-1 systems."

General Dynamics Information Technology gave no details as to the value of the contract or its performance period.
