Baghdad (AFP) Dec 22, 2010
French Prime Minister Francois Fillon congratulated his Iraqi counterpart Nuri al-Maliki on winning parliamentary approval for his new cabinet in a letter delivered by the embassy late Tuesday.

"I take pleasure in this new step forward in reinforcing unity, stability and democracy in your country and pay tribute to the sense of responsibility and national interest that you and all the leaders displayed," Fillon said.

"France will give you every support as you press ahead with the remarkable reconstruction and stabilisation effort that you have launched but will also help Iraq regain its place in the regional and international arena," added the letter delivered by charge d'affaires Issa Maraut.

The Iraqi parliament on Tuesday passed a vote of confidence in a national unity government formed by Maliki after more than nine months of political wrangling following an inconclusive general election.
