One woman has died and hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes as several Albanian regions were hit by floods following days of torrential rains, officials said Saturday.

The body of a 75-year-old woman was found on Saturday in Devoll, a municipality in the country's southeast, after a several-hour search, a police statement said.

The woman, reported missing on Friday, was carried away by the floodwaters, it added.

At least 200 families have been evacuated since Thursday due to flooding that has damaged dozens of homes, a minister said.

"More than 1,500 hectares (3,706 acres) of agricultural land were submerged on Saturday in the south of the country," Defence Minister Pirro Vengu told journalists.

The losses of livestock and poultry that drowned are considerable, he added.

Also, around twenty bridges have been damaged, some requiring full reconstruction, the minister said.

Army units were engaged to help rescue and evacuate people at risk, distribute food as well as reinforce dams and embankments.

On Saturday, several hundred households were without electricity after numerous power poles were swept away by landslides, local media reported.

Some dozen roads have been flooded or blocked by landslides, according to media reports.
