Fincantieri delivers platform for nuclear reactor compartments

A semi-submersible floating platform has been delivered by Fincantieri to Russia's RosRAO for the transportation of nuclear submarine reactor compartments.

Construction of the Itarus, which was delivered to the Russians on Thursday at Fincantieri's shipyard in Muggiano, Italy, is the result of a 2003 deal between Italy and Russia for the decommissioning of nuclear submarines and the safe management of radioactive waste and nuclear fuel.

RosRAO is Russia's Federal State Unitary Enterprise for radioactive waste management.

Itarus will transport the decommissioned Russian Navy reactor compartments from a storage area of Sayda Bay, Russia, to a shipyard facing the Kola Peninsula in the Barents Sea. The vessel is more than 229 feet long, 95 feet long and has a deadweight capacity of 3,306 tons.

It will be manned by a crew of six, the Italian shipbuilder said.
