An electric supercar flipped and flew through the air at Beijing's FIA Formula E Championship on Saturday.

It was the first race of the championship that will go until June of 2015, and luckily the driver appears to be in good condition. Nick Heidfeld was neck and neck with Nicolas Prost when he crashed his vehicle, and he claims to only have a small amount of pain in his calf.

No flames or explosions occurred as a result of the crash, showing how safe these electric vehicles can actually be. No competition of electric vehicles of this kind had ever taken place, and Lucas Di Grassi will now go down in history as the first ever winner of such a race.

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) runs Formula 1 races and now these Formula E races, and its stated intention of the Formula E competition is to promote electric vehicles. With cars that can go as fast as 140 mph, there are sure to be more thrilling experiences. The former vice chairman of General Motors, Bob Lutz, claims almost all of us will be driving electric vehicles by 2039.
