EU urges Big Tech to be 'vigilant' after Slovak PM shooting

The EU on Thursday called on the world's biggest digital platforms, including Facebook and TikTok, to counter any disinformation based on footage of the shooting of Slovakia's prime minister.

Under a landmark EU content moderation law, digital platforms must crack down on illegal content as well as disinformation, and take measures to protect users online.

Robert Fico was shot on Wednesday as he spoke to members of the public after a meeting. The Slovak leader remained in a serious condition on Thursday.

A senior European Commission official sent a letter to 23 "very large" platforms named under the law known as the Digital Services Act (DSA).

The letter urged "them to be vigilant and take measures, if necessary, to avoid manipulation of the already widely circulating video, creating disinformation to exploit the situation", an EU official told AFP.

The commission will hold an "election readiness roundtable" on Friday ahead of EU polls in June and invited the platforms to provide "information on their measures to limit the sharing and/or amplification of manipulated media related to the incident", the official added.

Russian state media has quoted individuals who claim that Fico was attacked because of his friendly relations with Moscow.
