Denmark will succeed Sweden in chairing the Nordic Defense Cooperation, which will deepen cooperation on logistics among member states.

The chairmanship will be held by the Danish Ministry of Defense. The chairmanship for the Nordic Defense Cooperation, also known as NORDEFCO, is shared in rotation by Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway. Iceland participates in the organization, but does not take a turn as chairman.

Finland is scheduled to hold the chairmanship in 2017.

"The NORDEFCO defense cooperation is progressing, and important steps have been taken the past years, developing closer cooperation between the Nordic countries," the organization said in a statement. "The Danish Chairmanship will continue the important work from the previous chairmanships, including the ongoing NORDEFCO Action Plans."

Defense News reports NORDEFCO will focus on logistics cooperation, which will task the organization in increasing joint force activities and further pooling resources, and supporting UN missions as well as possible contributions to the East African Standby Force.

NORDEFCO was established following the signing of a memorandum of understanding in Helinski on Nov. 4, 2009, which replaced earlier cooperative agreements on defense between Nordic countries.

Optimized Arctic observations for improving weather forecast in the northern sea route
Tokyo, Japan (SPX) Jan 13, 2016
The current reduction in Arctic sea-ice extent causes unpredictable weather phenomena in the Arctic Ocean (strong winds, high waves, and rapid sea-ice movement associated with cyclones) also over the mid-latitudes (heat waves, severe winters, etc.). With such changing background conditions, more accurate weather forecasts are needed to safely navigate along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) and ... read more
