DARPA announces 3rd Electronics Resurgence Initiative Summit and MTO Symposium

New to the 2020 event is the MTO Symposium. This addition will allow participants to better understand the latest research happening across MTO's program portfolio, outside of the scope of ERI but still relevant to the key modernization priorities. Symposium activities will include a series of presentations and an interactive panel discussion with MTO program managers working on the latest research in areas such as Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT), Command, Control, Communications, Computing, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR), and other RF and microsystems technology areas.

From August 18-20, DARPA will host its third Electronics Resurgence Initiative (ERI) Summit and Microsystems Technology Office (MTO) Symposium. The annual event brings together leaders from across the electronics ecosystem - spanning government, defense, academia, and industry - to foster collaboration and share technical progress on DARPA's five-year, $1.5 billion dollar investment into the advancement of the U.S. semiconductor industry. To ensure the health and safety of the more than 1,000 expected attendees, the 2020 Summit will be hosted on a world-class, immersive, and entirely virtual platform with built-in features for live presentations, online interaction, exhibits, and networking.

The 2020 Summit will emphasize ongoing and potential transition opportunities for DARPA technologies that address a range of critical Department of Defense (DoD) and commercial modernization priorities, such as 3D heterogeneous integration, autonomy and artificial intelligence, hardware security and cybersecurity, as well as 5G and future radio frequency (RF) communications.

"Three years into the Initiative, ERI performers are generating results with the potential to enhance national security and create differentiated national advantages," said Dr. Mark Rosker, director of DARPA's Microsystems Technology Office.

"The ERI Summit and MTO Symposium gives us the opportunity to share these developments with the community and, perhaps most critically, to develop and enhance collaborations with transition partners in the defense and commercial sectors that could lead to the continued development and delivery of these technologies. Ensuring these partnerships can translate DARPA-funded ideas into technologies that will address critical national security needs is a key indicator of ERI's long-term success."

In addition to research updates, the 2020 Summit will feature keynote presentations from industry leaders and potential transition partners, each bringing a unique perspective on the state of the domestic industry and its future direction. Speakers and panelists include Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Arm CEO Simon Segars, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Lisa Porter, and Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy.

The Summit will also host a technical leadership panel featuring Venkata M. (Murthy) Renduchintala, Chief Engineering Officer and Group President of the Technology, Systems, Architecture and Client Group at Intel Corporation; Ahmad Bahai, CTO at Texas Instruments; James Klein, President of Infrastructure and Defense Products at Qorvo; and Barbara Borgonovi, Vice President for Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems at Raytheon Intelligence and Space.

During the event, DARPA will also host informative poster sessions and technology demonstrations in an online, interactive exhibit hall. Virtual workshops and an open networking venue will foster an environment for idea sharing, discussions, and the formation of future program concepts and research efforts. These activities will feature direct audio, visual, and text communication between attendees and presenters.

New to the 2020 event is the MTO Symposium. This addition will allow participants to better understand the latest research happening across MTO's program portfolio, outside of the scope of ERI but still relevant to the key modernization priorities. Symposium activities will include a series of presentations and an interactive panel discussion with MTO program managers working on the latest research in areas such as Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT), Command, Control, Communications, Computing, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR), and other RF and microsystems technology areas.

Event registration is currently open via the link at eri-summit.darpa.mil, which also includes an agenda, virtual presentation logistics, and other event details. To maximize the functionality of the virtual platform, registration will be capped at 1,500 attendees, with a potential cap of 50 attendees per organization. Early registration is strongly recommended. Registration will close on July 27, 2020, or once attendance capacity is met, whichever comes first. Registration fees are $50 per attendee. The virtual platform will only be available to registered attendees. Registration will not be available during the virtual event.
