China quake death toll at 51,151, 29,328 missing: govt

The death toll from last week's earthquake in southwest China has risen to 51,151, with 29,328 others still missing, the government said Thursday.

Another 288,431 people were injured in the May 12 quake, Guo Weimin, a spokesman for China's State Council, or Cabinet, told a news conference.

The confirmed death toll showed a rise of nearly 9,800 from Wednesday.

Quake scenario unveiled for S.California

If California were struck by an earthquake similar to the one that devastated China, 1,800 people would die, the U.S. Geological Survey said Thursday.
