China can control inflation: deputy central bank head
Paris (AFP) March 7, 2008 The deputy head of the Chinese central bank voiced confidence here Friday that inflation in China, which jumped 7.1 percent in January in annual terms, can be brought down to an "acceptable level" this year. "I am confident that we can control inflation in China this year at an acceptable level," Yi Gang told a conference on globalisation organised by the Bank of France. He said the country had enjoyed four years of "bumper harvests" while its manufacturing sector still had "tremendous capacity." "It is our number one task -- to fight inflation," he declared. The inflation spurt in January to it highest level in 11 years was due in part to bad weather than paralysed much of the country.
