Bird flu breaks out at Tibet poultry farm: China
Beijing (AFP) April 7, 2008 An outbreak of bird flu has occurred at a poultry farm in restive Tibet, resulting in the deaths of at least 268 fowl, China's Ministry of Agriculture said Monday. Tests on dead birds at the farm in the village of Zhuba in Qamdo county revealed the virus was the deadly H5N1 strain, according to an announcement on the ministry's website. The outbreak was reported to authorities last Friday, the ministry said, adding that it had been contained but providing no further details. The case was one of several such outbreaks reported in China this year, with three people dying of bird flu in 2008, according to earlier reports. The latest outbreak comes despite a campaign last year to try to contain the disease, during which Chinese authorities attempted to vaccinate tens of millions of poultry and stepped up public education efforts. Bird flu has killed more than 230 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organisation. Scientists fear the virus could eventually mutate into a form that is easily transmissible between humans, triggering a global pandemic.
