Canberra expressed "deep concerns" on Tuesday about Hong Kong's decision to issue bounties for the arrest of eight overseas activists and vowed to support those residing in Australia.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia would steadfastly support freedom of expression and the right of people to express political views peacefully.

"People who do so in our country will be supported," she said.

Two of the eight activists targeted by Hong Kong authorities are believed to be in Australia.

Wong hit back after warnings from Hong Kong leader John Lee that those who do not surrender will be "pursued for life" and will "spend their days in fear".

She warned that Australia had an "unequivocal" position on foreign interference in Australian democracy and "strong rules" to back that up.

"Any allegations of foreign interference can be investigated by the appropriate authorities," she warned.
