Asian Development Bank mulling response to Myanmar cyclone

The head of the Asian Development Bank Tuesday expressed his condolences to Myanmar over the country's devastating cyclone, and said the institution would decide how best to respond.

"I would like to take a moment to offer, on behalf of all of us at ADB, our heartfelt condolences to the people of Myanmar who are struggling through the aftermath of Sunday's cyclone with huge losses of life and property," ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda said.

"We will work closely with shareholders and development partners to decide how best to respond," he told a news conference at the end of a four-day annual ADB meeting in Madrid.

More than 22,000 people were killed in Myanmar's devastating cyclone and 41,000 are still missing four days after the storm slammed into the country's southern coast.

US leads pressure on Myanmar to admit aid agencies

The United States and Australia led international calls Tuesday for the military junta in Myanmar to ease entry restrictions to allow disaster relief to reach the cyclone-hit country.
