Amazon Founder Recruiting For Private Space Program
San Francisco (AFP) Jan 04, 2007 The founder of retail website Amazon advertised Thursday for engineers to join his private program aimed at opening the galaxy to more human exploration. Jeff Bezos posted his hiring offer at www.blueorigin.com, the website of the Blue Origin 9 company he is financing with the goal of making spaceflights more affordable for the masses. "We're working, patiently and step-by-step, to lower the cost of spaceflight so that many people can afford to go and so that we humans can better continue exploring the solar system," Bezos wrote. "Accomplishing this mission will take a long time, and we're working on it methodically. Slow and steady is the way to achieve results, and we do not kid ourselves into thinking this will get easier as we go along." Bezos included photos and a video clip of a November test flight of a Goddard rocket in Texas. An Amazon web service was used to create the visual presentation. The video shows a dome-shaped rocket rising several hundred feet straight into the air and then easing back to the ground. The launch was the program's premier space craft and the goal was to build a New Shepard vertical take-off and landing vehicle capable of taking several astronauts into orbit, according to Bezos. Blue Origin is actively hiring, particularly propulsion or turbo-machinery engineers, according to Bezos. Bezos wrote that Blue Origin "wants to hire you, assuming you're a hard-working, technically-gifted, team-oriented, experienced aerospace engineer or engineering leader."

Space Command Civilian Volunteers To Deploy Down Range
Peterson AFB CO (AFPN) Jan 01, 2007In January, a civilian from Air Force Space Command will be going down range in support of the war on terrorism. The volunteer, assigned the Logistics and Warfighting Integration Directorate, stepped up to fill a base-level planner position for the Air Force. Michele Kantak, a wife and mother of one, will deploy soon after the new year for a 120-day rotation to Southwest Asia. |
