Adoption of dynamic control technology improves EV charging grid integration

Researchers have tested the use of Distribution Static Compensators (D-STATCOM) at electric vehicle charging stations to control the effects of fluctuating demand as more electric vehicles plug in and out through the day. The tests involved a model of a commercial 180 kW charging station in Denver, Colorado, which simulates the operation of fifteen chargers with unpredictable vehicle arrival patterns and a constant base load.

When D-STATCOM technology was introduced, scientists observed a reduction in voltage deviations and frequency instability, along with less current and voltage imbalance and a drop in total harmonic distortion. These measures indicate that D-STATCOM units, when installed at charging sites, can reduce electrical stress, prevent equipment wear, and help maintain supply quality at busy stations, especially during periods of peak demand.

Testing also included high and low seasonal loads, representing typical summer cooling and winter heating surges. Results showed that the grid remained balanced and efficient even under these conditions, confirming the applicability of load-balancing devices across changing real-world environments.

Stable power quality at charging sites means both faster charging for drivers and less risk of disruption or damage to the grid infrastructure. Grid operators may find that technology like D-STATCOM allows for efficient integration of additional renewable energy sources, and helps to manage future increases in EV traffic without extensive infrastructure upgrades.

Researchers suggest the next steps may involve integration with predictive models - such as machine learning for forecasting vehicle arrivals or coordinating solar power input. The study notes that widespread adoption of such grid-balancing solutions could play an important role in supporting a scalable and reliable electric mobility network.
